Understand Social Security work incentives

In certain situations, special rules allow people with disabilities receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to work and still receive monthly payments and Medicare or Medicaid. Social Security calls these rules work incentives.

Disability income

In determining the amount of disability income in Dallas or elsewhere that you still can receive if you are working and disabled, the Social Security Administration may adjust your benefits. Some of the situations that these work incentives apply in are as follows:

  • Impairment-related work expenses: The cost of certain impairment-related expenses that you need in order to work are deducted from earnings. Examples of impairment-related expenses are items such as a wheelchair or walker.
  • Subsidies and special conditions: This refers to support you receive on the job that could result in your receiving more pay than the actual value of the services you performed. The value of subsidies and special conditions is deducted from earnings.
  • Continued payment under a vocational rehabilitation program (also known as Section 301 Payments): If you medically recover and no longer meet the SSA definition of disability, monthly payments can continue if you are actively participating in an approved vocational rehabilitation (VR) program that is expected to help you become self-supporting. Your monthly SSDI and/or social security income payments can continue until you complete the program.
  • Trial Work Period: A trial work period allows you to test your ability to work for at least 9 months. During your trial work period, you receive your full Social Security disability benefit regardless of how much you earn as long as your work activity has been reported and you continue to have a disabling impairment. The nine months does not need to be consecutive and your trial work period lasts until you accumulate nine months within a rolling 60-month period.
